RESIN SURGERY

With thanks to Jan of The Stay At Home Miniaturist Group who inspired me to attempt to "bash" a resin figure to make it into the figure I wanted and also to make it unique.

This resin figure is of a grocer. His hands were not quite in the position I wanted as I preferred him to be holding a hand out to give something to a customer.

All this needed was to remove a hand, turn it and glue into position. Fill in with Milliput* and re-paint the whole figure.

(Milliput is a two part epoxy compound. Two equal sized pieces are thoroughly mixed and then the putty can be moulded to shape. It has strong adhesive properties, is waterproof and when set can be sawn, sanded, drilled, painted etc.)

The original figure as purchased

Long consideration was given before cutting. The cut needed to be in a position which would allow for realistic re-positioning to make the hand and arm look natural yet also needed to be easy to get to and easy to disguise when re-joined.

Here the hand has been cut off just above the cuff. The join can be hidden behind the cuff and disguised as wrinkles in the shirt.

The cut was made partly by sawing with a razor saw and partly by knocking it hard to break the last part where the saw couldn't reach into.

After separation the parts were carefully filed and sanded to clean up the surfaces and remove unwanted pieces.

The completed join, now only some final sanding is needed before repainting the whole figure to give a better look with a more natural skin tone. Resulting in a Grocer to stand in "The Happy Cat" in just the position required and at a fraction of the cost of purchasing a similar 'doll'.

Original for comparison

As can be seen the right arm is now straighter and further forward with the fingers turned to point downwards in position to hold a paper bag of goods out to a customer.

A small change but a considerable difference in use within a scene.

Try resin figure surgery to produce a range of individual figures for your model scenes for minimal cost. It is even possible to swap parts from one figure to another to create totally different people.
