INSTRUCTIONS

YOU WILL NEED:-
Polymer clay - orange, small amounts green and caramel brown (optional)
- I used Fimo Classic
Cotton ball slightly smaller than required pumpkin. The one used here is 30mm diameter.
12 volt grain of wheat bulb with wire "tail"
Super glue (Zap-a-gap)
Tools - scalpel, cocktail sticks, tweezers
Prepare orange clay, mix in a little caramel brown if required to tone down the bright orange.
Press out two circles approximately 3mm thick each large enough to easily cover half of cotton ball. (1)
Wrap cotton ball with the two circles of clay ensuring that the hole in the ball is on the seam. Squeeze edges together where they meet. (2)
Trim off excess clay and smooth seam. Roll ball gently between palms. Any slight uneveness need not be corrected as a pumpkin is not a smooth ball. (3)
Locate the hole and insert cocktail stick.
Carefully holding ball upright on cocktail stick mark ridges from top to bottom with another cocktail stick. By ensuring that the seam line runs top to bottom it can be completely hidden at this stage.
Depress the top centre slightly and add stalk made with green clay, turn end in a slight curve as shown. The ridges are also clearly shown here.(4)
Make a support for the cocktail stick "handle", I use a tripod of wooden clothes pegs or you could stick into an old potato. (5)
Bake according to instructions for the polymer clay you are using.
When cool carefully cut out features of face, remember not to cut too much at this stage, and remove a slice from the base with the hole in the centre. (6 - 7)
Moisten the cotton ball with a little water, it will begin to dissolve and you will be able to remove it by using tweezers to leave the pumpkin hollow. (8 - 9)
Make fine adjustments to the features by trimming a little extra away. (10)
Thread the wire "tail" of grain of wheat bulb through hole and glue bulb in place on base. (11)
Glue base carefully back into place on pumpkin, positioning so it fits exactly.
The finished pumpkin can be displayed on a base/table/shelf etc. with small hole drilled to thread the wire through in order to hide it
